Thesixtyone

Boing Boing: Music discovery game connects indies and fans - The SixtyOne

Thesixtyone is a "music discovery game" created by two USC students who quit their jobs to build a site that helps musicians and audiences discover each other. Fans use Digg-style thumbs-up to rate the music that's uploaded, but the game is that each rating costs you points, and you get more points if you rate up a song that lots of other people rate up too.

MP3 Blogs Offer File Sharing Even the RIAA Could Love

"Although the term “file sharing” has all sorts of ugly connotations, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. In some cases, it’s even a win-win-win situation for the recording industry, music lovers — and Google."

Er, does this sound,l like, er, useful?

One Web ASP MP3 Server

"One Web MP3 Server is a free ASP application that turns your MP3 collection into a website. It allows you to quickly access your music over a local network or even the Internet. Now you can browse, search, create playlists and listen to your files using one interface, from any remote computer. Dreams Of Flying

I liked these:

Jan Von Holleben

Solveig thinks his stuff was on at the V&A earlier this year too.

FE-Mittelschrift (kottke.org)

Erik Spiekermann appears again!

FE-Mittelschrift (kottke.org)

"The official typeface for our license plates is now called FE-Mittelschrift, with FE meaning it is Fälschungs-Erschwert, i.e. difficult to forge. Apparently car thieves, terrorists and notorious law-breakers had been exploiting DIN's geometric construction principle and turning E into F or 3 into 8 etc by simply using a bit of black tape or white paint."

Maybe we don't need an iPhone

Just one of these

Helvetica. Period.

"The 50s ad has too many exclamation points, lots of wedding-invitation-style script, and it's very cheesy.
Now, look at this, a few years later.
Same product. A big glass of cold, refreshing, crisp Coke. And in Helvetica bold:
'The real thing. Period.
Coke. Period.
Any questions?
Of course not."

Helvetica rocks. And Michael Beirut works for Pentagram (career profile here). He contributes to Design Observer.

Also, the film is out on DVD on 26 November. Yay :)

So it looks like Yahoo! should buy Isotoma!

Or at least Sleevenotez:

Check out this post from the head of Yahoo! Music!:

Convenience Wins, Hubris Loses and Content vs. Context, a Presentation for Some Music Industry Friends

bits that should make you want to read are:

in a manner of speaking iTunes is a spreadsheet that plays music. It’s context-free. You just paid $10 for that album — who plays drums? I dunno, WHY DON’T YOU GO TO THE WEB TO FIND OUT, BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE THE CONTEXT IS.

...

But the content experience on the Web is crap. Go to Aquarium Drunkard, click an MP3. If you don’t get a 404, you’ll get a Save As… dialog or the SAME GOD DAMN QUICKTIME BAR FROM 1995. OMFG. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THIS IS ALL WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED IN 15 YEARS ON THE WEB? It makes me insane.

...

FIX IT. Your fans are pouring their music-loving hearts into blogs, Wikipedia, etc and what tools have you given them to work with? Not much, unfortunately.

This is what I’m vowing to devote my energy, and Yahoo!’s energy to

Go tell him to buy Sleevenotez. It's the product he wants and it already exists...

Download of the Day: Google AutoPager (Greasemonkey) - Lifehacker

Google AutoPager (Greasemonkey) - Lifehacker

"Typically, when you get to the bottom of a search page, you have to click Next to view the next batch of results. Not so with AutoPager: It fetches and appends the next batch as you scroll down, creating the illusion of infinite scrolling. Obviously you could just increase the number of results that appear when you search, but that makes for longer load times. AutoPager retrieves extra results a page at a time, as needed. Great little script; works like a charm."

"OscarTorrents is the Oscars as it should be -- everyone can download the year's nominations using the popular BitTorrent service, watch the movies, then use our rating system to choose their favourites. Why restrict the voting to a few bought-off jurors when the whole world can have their say?"

Mobile on-demand subsciption service for music

Unlimited mobile music for £1.99 a week

In what may prove to be the most far-reaching digital music launch since iTunes, Omnifone today took the wraps off its MusicStation service.
The service gives mobile phone users access to the big four labels' music catalogs on-demand for £1.99 (€2.99) a week, using a player that runs on mid-range feature phones and GPRS or EDGE networks, as well as high-end 3G phones - which Omnifone reckons gives it access to 70 per cent of the world's phone users. Indie content will follow, it's expected, as the indies are in the process of setting up their one-stop licensing arm Merlin, announced earlier this month.

Wists - social shopping

Wists, top web picks from for all. Wists, social shopping scrapbook, wishlist

Wists adds a social aspect to shopping, so you can share what your wishlist on your blog. But even more interestingly perhaps are these three websites that are part ofthe network:

1 - smashingtelly.com - which has a list of the best full length tv shows available on the internet.

2 - cribcandy.com - which is a list of all kinds of really interesting things you might want to buy for your house. Selected by people who seem to know what they are talking about. Because it's not all from shop there's less dross.

3 - popgloss.com - which is the same idea as cribcandy but for womens clothes.

Lend Money to the Developing World Life Goggles

Lend Money to the Developing World

Kiva is a non-profit site that allows you to lend money to someone in the developing world, empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty. Essentially you can “sponsor a business”. It works in 4 steps:

1. Lenders pick a business and make a loan using their credit card.
2. Kiva transfers funds to local partners. Partner disburses loans to each business.
3. Over time, partner collects repayments and provides business updates at Kiva.org.
4. Funds are returned to lender. Lender may withdraw or re-loan.

Steve Jobs - Thoughts on Music

An interesting article by Steve Jobs where he completely agrees with what I said on Doug's blog the other day (he just doesn't cite his references damn him!)

Apple - Thoughts on Music: "With the stunning global success of Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes online music store, some have called for Apple to “open” the digital rights management (DRM) system that Apple uses to protect its music against theft, so that music purchased from iTunes can be played on digital devices purchased from other companies, and protected music purchased from other online music stores can play on iPods. Let’s examine the current situation and how we got here, then look at three possible alternatives for the future."

Tax Takers Send in the Spiders

Wired News: Tax Takers Send in the Spiders: "Websites around the world are getting a new computerized visitor among the Googlebots and Yahoo web spiders: The taxman. A five-nation tax enforcement cartel has been quietly cracking down on suspected internet tax cheats, using a sophisticated web crawling program to monitor transactions on auction sites, and track operators of online shops, poker and porn sites."

How The RIAA Is Like 17th Century French Button-Makers

Techdirt: History Repeats Itself: How The RIAA Is Like 17th Century French Button-Makers

France, 1666:

"Shortly after the matter of cloth weaving has been disposed of, the button makers guild raises a cry of outrage; the tailors are beginning to make buttons out of cloth, an unheard-of thing. The government, indignant that an innovation should threaten a settled industry, imposes a fine on the cloth-button makers. But the wardens of the button guild are not yet satisfied. They demand the right to search people's homes and wardrobes and fine and even arrest them on the streets if they are seen wearing these subversive goods."

Oh how we laughed....

Stormtrooper effect

Stormtrooper effect: "The Stormtrooper effect, also called Stormtrooper syndrome, is a cliche in works of fiction where minor characters (cannon fodder) are unrealistically ineffective in combat against more important characters (almost always the protagonists 'equipped' with character shields). The name originated with the armed Imperial Stormtroopers in the original Star Wars trilogy, who, despite their considerable advantages of close range, overwhelming numbers, professional military training, full armor, military-grade firepower, and noticeable combat effectiveness against non-speaking characters, were incapable of seriously harming or indeed merely hitting the protagonists. The effect is generally employed either to increase the dramatic tension of an action scene or to accentuate the heroes' fighting prowess."
